8 TB · 3.5-inch · SATA · 7200 RPM · CMR · Seagate part ST8000VN004
Seagate's 8 TB IronWolf NAS hard drive in its 7200 RPM, air-filled CMR version (ST8000VN004), with a 256 MB cache, a rated 210 MB/s outer-track sustained transfer, a 180 TB/year workload rating and a three-year limited warranty.

Specifications checked 26 Sept 2026Manufacturer specifications, not a hands-on test.
CMR recording, a rotational-vibration sensor and error recovery control are specified for 1–8 bay NAS use, with IronWolf Health Management on supported NAS systems.
Rated for 24×7 operation (8,760 power-on hours a year) with a 180 TB/year workload limit and 1 million hours MTBF.
Three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services are included alongside the three-year limited warranty, where the service is offered.
Seagate rates only an outer-diameter sequential maximum (210 MB/s) for this 7,200 RPM hard drive; its product manual adds a 4.16 ms average latency but gives no seek-time or random-access performance figures.
Seagate's data sheet rates it at 10.1 W average operating and 7.8 W idle power and 28–32 dBA acoustics, versus 5.3 W / 4.0 W and 25–26 dBA for the 5400 RPM ST8000VN002; the ST8000VN004 product manual lists a lower 7.16 W average idle.
The warranty is three years and the workload rating 180 TB/year, versus the five-year limited warranty and 550 TB/year workload rating Seagate states for its IronWolf Pro drives.

8 TB decimal capacity (Seagate: one terabyte equals one trillion bytes). Some capacity is used for formatting and other functions.
3.5-inch hard disk drive with conventional magnetic recording (CMR), air-filled design per Seagate.
SourceSeagate lists height, maximum width and maximum depth. Seagate data sheet DS1904.23 first table; ST8000VN004 is the fourth model column (16TB ST16000VN001, 12TB ST12000VN0008, 10TB ST10000VN000, 8TB ST8000VN004, 8TB ST8000VN002).
Product manual: 512 bytes per logical sector and 4096 bytes per physical sector.
SourceSeagate's data sheet (DS1904.23, ST8000VN004 column) and the product page's key specifications list a typical weight of 720 g (1.59 lb), while Seagate's ST8000VN004 product manual (Rev. F) lists a maximum weight of 716 g (1.579 lb). A typical weight above the stated maximum cannot both be right, so no single weight is recorded.
Seagate maximum sustained transfer rate at the outer diameter (OD); Seagate states actual data rates may vary depending on operating environment and other factors. Seagate's IronWolf product page copy says 'delivering sustained data rates up to 180 MB/s' without naming a model or capacity; the data sheet's ST8000VN004 column gives 210 MB/s, which is the figure recorded here. Seagate data sheet DS1904.23 first table; ST8000VN004 is the fourth model column (16TB ST16000VN001, 12TB ST12000VN0008, 10TB ST10000VN000, 8TB ST8000VN004, 8TB ST8000VN002). Not our measurement.
Outer-diameter maximum, not an average. Seagate's IronWolf product page copy says 'delivering sustained data rates up to 180 MB/s' without naming a model or capacity; the data sheet's ST8000VN004 column gives 210 MB/s, which is the figure recorded here. Seagate data sheet DS1904.23 first table; ST8000VN004 is the fourth model column (16TB ST16000VN001, 12TB ST12000VN0008, 10TB ST10000VN000, 8TB ST8000VN004, 8TB ST8000VN002).
The other 8 TB IronWolf part, ST8000VN002, is a 5400 RPM drive; this record is ST8000VN004. Seagate data sheet DS1904.23 first table; ST8000VN004 is the fourth model column (16TB ST16000VN001, 12TB ST12000VN0008, 10TB ST10000VN000, 8TB ST8000VN004, 8TB ST8000VN002).
Seagate states Rescue services are not available in all countries. Workload rate limit is a rating, not a warranty write cap stated by Seagate.
Seagate workload rate limit (WRL); drives are specified for 8,760 power-on hours per year (24×7).
SourceSeagate-rated mean time between failures (data sheet row 'Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF, hours)'). The product manual states an annualized failure rate of 0.87% (MTBF of 1,000,000 hours) over a 5-year service life in Enterprise Storage field conditions limited to 8760 power-on hours per year, a drive-reported HDA temperature of 40 °C or less, an ambient wet bulb of 26 °C or less and a typical workload, and calls the AFR (MTBF) a population statistic not relevant to individual units.
Seagate data sheet 'Best-Fit Applications'; the data sheet describes IronWolf as purpose-built for connected-home, SOHO and small-to-medium business NAS environments.
SourceThe two Seagate sources disagree on idle power: the data sheet (DS1904.23, ST8000VN004 column) lists 7.8 W idle average, while the ST8000VN004 product manual's Table 2 (DC power requirements, 8TB) lists 7.16 W average idle; neither figure is chosen. The data sheet gives one 10.1 W average operating figure; the manual gives only per-workload typical operating totals: 9.96 W random read 4K16Q, 9.16 W random write 4K16Q, 10.02 W sequential read 64K16Q and 9.54 W sequential write 64K16Q. Both list 1.0 W standby. The manual's typical figures are averages of drives tested under nominal conditions at 5.0 V and 12.0 V input and 25 °C ambient.
Seagate data sheet row 'Voltage Tolerance, Inc. Noise (5V/12V)': ±5% / ±10% for ST8000VN004. Seagate data sheet DS1904.23 first table; ST8000VN004 is the fourth model column (16TB ST16000VN001, 12TB ST12000VN0008, 10TB ST10000VN000, 8TB ST8000VN004, 8TB ST8000VN002).
SourceProduct manual: supports hot-plug operation per the Serial ATA Revision 3.3 specification.
SourceSeagate says IronWolf Health Management needs a supported NAS system; check with the NAS vendor. Seagate's product page says IronWolf drives are tested for compatibility with NAS brands such as Asustor and QNAP and recommends consulting the NAS vendor's compatibility list for approved drives.
Seagate does not recommend sustained drive temperatures above 60 °C.
SourceSeagate's ST8000VN004 product manual rates operational shock separately: 70 Gs for reads and 40 Gs for writes at a maximum pulse duration of 2 ms. The data sheet (DS1904.23, ST8000VN004 column, row 'Shock, Operating/Nonoperating: 2ms (max)': 70Gs/300Gs) gives a single 70 Gs operating figure, which matches the read rating.
